Vila Nova de Gaia became the legal home of port wine in 1703 under the Methuen Treaty, which granted British merchants exclusive export rights in exchange for lower tariffs on Portuguese wine. The district's fifty-eight registered lodges store ninety percent of the world's aged port, a concentration born from Gaia's maritime microclimate and proximity to Porto's shipping quays. The seven-bridge cruise route covers eleven kilometres of the Douro's tidal lower reach, where the river widens to 300 metres before meeting the Atlantic at Foz do Douro. Each bridge represents a distinct engineering era: the 1886 wrought-iron railway span, the 1963 reinforced-concrete arch, the 2003 cable-stayed metro crossing.
